As environments have changed over the long span of geological time so have species developed in ecosystems into an ever-increasing number of specialisations. Throughout the Earth’s history this process has been sometimes slow and gradual, sometimes sudden. However, increasingly rapid ecological changes at the end of the Holocene precipitated a series of profound transformations in many animal species. These climatic and biological changes ushered in the period referred to as the Plasticene Epoch.
